The Department of Posts, under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, has issued an important communication regarding the implementation of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the booking and handling of prohibited items in parcels transmitted via air.

The directive has been issued by the Parcel Directorate with the objective of ensuring safe and compliant transmission of Speed Post parcels through air networks. It also aims to streamline the processes involved in identifying, screening, and handling prohibited items during booking and transmission stages.

• Booking Offices

• Business Parcel (BNPL) Offices

• Business Post Centres (BPCs)

• Automated Processing Centres (APMOs/TMOs)

• Other operational units involved in parcel transmission

Review and Feedback Mechanism

Since the SOP is currently provisional, Circles have been advised to:

• Review operational aspects during implementation

• Identify challenges or issues faced

• Submit suggestions or feedback for improvement

All feedback must be consolidated and shared with the Parcel Directorate by 31 March 2026 for further review and refinement of the SOP.

System Updates and Monitoring

The Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT) has been tasked with making necessary system modifications in line with the SOP. This includes enabling functionalities such as:

• Generation of relevant reports in the Management Information System (MIS)

• Monitoring and review at Divisional, Regional, Circle, and Directorate levels
