1Which LTC Block Year Applies in 2026?

For regular employees, LTC operates on a four-year block cycle. The block that just closed runs from 2022–2025, and 2026 opens the new regular block:

  • Previous block: 2022–2025
  • Current block (from 2026): 2026–2029
Don't assume automatically: Not every journey taken in 2026 is a new-block journey. Check whether you're using a fresh 2026–29 entitlement or an unavailed concession carried forward from 2022–2025.

2What LTC Options Are Available?

A. Home Town LTC

Travel concession to your officially declared hometown.

B. Anywhere in India LTC

Travel to a destination of your choice within India, subject to applicable rules. You generally cannot claim both Home Town and Anywhere in India LTC for the same entitlement.

C. Special Dispensation LTC

Enhanced provisions — including air travel for employees not otherwise air-entitled — apply for journeys to:

  • North Eastern Region (NER)
  • Jammu & Kashmir
  • Ladakh
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands

3Can You Use Previous Block LTC in 2026?

DoPT's LTC FAQ specifically addresses calendar year 2026, including carry-forward of an unavailed LTC from the previous block. If you had an eligible but unused entitlement from 2022–2025, verify your carry-forward status before treating a 2026 journey as belonging to the new block.

Practical tip: Clearly mention in your application whether the journey is being claimed "against previous block" or "against current block." Ask your controlling office to verify your LTC record before sanction.

4Air Ticket Booking — The Rule Most Employees Get Wrong

LTC air tickets must be booked only through DoPT-authorised agencies:

  • Balmer Lawrie & Company Ltd.
  • Ashok Travels & Tours
  • IRCTC

Under the October 2023 modification, these agencies must display the cheapest available fare, along with flights priced up to 10% above the cheapest fare, within the prescribed time slot.

Unauthorised booking: Relaxation is possible only in unavoidable circumstances and requires competent-authority approval — it is not automatic. Never book outside the authorised channel and assume reimbursement.

5Cheapest Available Fare Rule

Reimbursement is linked to the eligible/entitled fare — not whatever you choose to spend. Booking through an authorised agency itself serves as proof that the fare was the cheapest available under guidelines.

FlightFareStatus
Flight A₹6,000Cheapest — eligible
Flight B₹6,400Within 10% slab — eligible
Flight C₹6,550Within 10% slab — eligible
Flight D₹8,000Excess likely not reimbursed

Choosing a pricier flight for convenient timing may mean the excess amount is not reimbursed.

6LTC Advance vs. Final Claim

LTC Advance is a provisional payment made before the journey. Final LTC Claim is the actual settlement submitted after the journey is completed, with supporting documents.

Never treat advance as final payment. If actual admissible expenditure is lower than the advance drawn, the excess must be recovered or refunded.

10Frequently Asked Questions

What is the LTC block year for 2026?
2026 begins the new regular block of 2026–2029. The previous block was 2022–2025.
Can I still use my unavailed LTC from 2022–2025 in 2026?
Possibly, subject to carry-forward rules under DoPT's LTC FAQ. Verify your record with your controlling office and clearly mark the application as being claimed against the previous block.
Which agencies are authorised for LTC air-ticket booking?
Balmer Lawrie & Company Ltd., Ashok Travels & Tours, and IRCTC are the three DoPT-authorised booking agencies.
Is LTC advance the same as the final claim amount?
No. Advance is a provisional payment before travel. The final claim, submitted after the journey, is reconciled against the advance — with excess amounts recoverable.
Can non-air-entitled employees fly under LTC?
Yes, under the Special Dispensation Scheme for NER, J&K, Ladakh, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, subject to prescribed conditions.
Can I hold two tickets and decide later which to use?
No. DoPT rules specifically prohibit holding more than one ticket for the same leg of an LTC journey.
